The quotation, "I would die for my country but I could never let my country
die for me," sounds similar to some lines written by Salvador Espriu, a
Catalan poet:
Sometimes it is necessary and unavoidable
That one man should die for a people.
But never should all the people die
For just one man.
I don't have an original source for this translation. It was cited in Robert
Quirk's biography, "Fidel Castro," (New York, London: W.W. Norton, 1993), p.
611.
