PART-TIME LIBRARY ASSISTANT
The Institute of Ophthalmology & Moorfields Eye Hospital Joint Library is
seeking an
enthusiastic assistant to join a small team undertaking a whole range of
duties. Experience of
information technology is essential, together with excellent interpersonal
skills, a flexible, accurate
and friendly approach and a willingness to work on one's own. Previous
library experience would
be useful. The post offers an excellent opportunity to acquire a range of
information skills and
would be suitable for a graduate seeking pre-library school experience.
The post is part-time and will be for 21 hours per week. The assistant
will be required to work one
evening duty until 6.00pm once a week and must be able to work Mondays.
The other days may
be worked as 4 half days. Starting salary will be on the Clerical Grade 3
(CRA3) pay scale at
spine point 13, being pro-rata of £11,689 + £2,134 London Allowance per
annum, ie £7,013.40 +
£1,280.40.

Job Description and Person Specification
Job Title : LIBRARY ASSISTANT
Grade : CRA GRADE 3
Salary Scale : £11,689 - £13,532 pro rata
Starting Salary : According to experience
London Allowance : £2,134 per annum
Normal Hours : 21 hours per week between the hours of 9.00am - 6.00pm
Monday to Friday, with occasional requirements outside of these hours.
Must be able to work Mondays and until 6 pm one day per week.
Annual Leave : 12 working days plus 14 public and statutory holidays
/closure days
Location : Employees of the Institute normally work at the Institute’s
main location in 11 - 43 Bath Street, London EC1V 9EL. Some members
of staff may also be located within Moorfields Eye Hospital, City Road,
London EC1V 2PD. The Institute reserves the right to re-locate staff
between the above two organisations. Occasionally, staff may be
required to work at other locations; this will be subject to discussion
between the member of staff and the Institute.

Background
The Joint Library of the Institute of Ophthalmology and Moorfields Eye
Hospital is a national resource and was awarded top marks in the latest
Quality Assurance Assessment. The library serves the information needs of
doctors, nurses, academics, researchers, students and other employees of
both organisations, in addition to supplying information to libraries and
members of the public on request.
Moorfields Eye Hospital has occupied the site in City Road since 1899 and
has developed a local, national and international reputation for eye care.
Moorfields is one of eight London postgraduate teaching hospitals and
provides education and training in Ophthalmology to nurses, doctors,
orthoptists, and other healthcare professionals both from this country and
abroad.
Library Services at UCL is converged into the Education and Information
Support Division, and consists of 15 libraries:-
The Institute of Ophthalmology, Clinical Sciences, Environmental Studies,
Human Communication Science, Middlesex School of Medicine, and the
Libraries of the Institute of Archaeology, the Institute of Child Health,
the Institute of Laryngology and Otology, the Royal National Institute for
the Deaf, the Institute of Orthopaedics, the Institute of Neurology, the
Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine, the Main Library, and the Science
Library.
The collections of the Institute and Moorfields number approximately
25,000 volumes (books and journals) plus boxed collections of reprints in
the Institute library numbering many thousands. Current journal titles
number 212. The classification system in use is unique to the two
libraries having been based on the National Library of Medicine
Classification (USA) and has been adapted and modified over a period of
time. The Institute has access to the UCL networked services, BIDS and Web
of Science. MEH Resources Room has Medline and CINAHL on CD-ROM plus a
variety of word processing, graphics and database packages.
The Institute of Ophthalmology is one of a number of specialised research
centres linked to University College London and is the nation’s major eye
resource. The Institute scored a “5*”, (highest point) in the last research
assessment exercise. The Institute is committed to a multi-disciplinary
research portfolio that furthers an understanding of the eye and visual
system linked with clinical investigations targeted to specific problems in
the prevention and treatment of eye disease. The combination of the
Institute’s research resource with the resources of Moorfields Eye
Hospital, which has the largest ophthalmic patient population in the
Western World, opens the way for advances at the forefront of vision
research and provides an unparalleled setting for research and training in
ophthalmology.
IT facilities are available to all staff and the Institute has modern
well-equipped laboratories which cater for academic staff who broadly cover
six disciplines of Clinical Ophthalmology, Molecular Genetics, Ophthalmic
Epidemiology, Pathology, Preventive Ophthalmology and Visual Science.
The Post
The Library Assistant is responsible for assisting in the provision of
information services to scientists, doctors, nurses, students and other
staff of the Institute and the Hospital and other constituent bodies of
University College London using the Library.
Main Activitities and Responsibilities
· Provision of customer services, including issue and return of materials
· Assisting staff and students in using Library services
· Journal check in and claims
· Interlibrary Loans processing, receiving and sending requests as received
by telephone, e-mail, etc
· Binding preparation
· Assistance with user education
· New books processing
· Assistance with cataloguing
· Preparing and sending of overdue letters
· Shelving and tidying materials
· Undertake any other duties as may be requested by the Librarian
The Person
· The successful applicant should be educated to degree level, and show an
interest in a career in the information field
· Experience of working in a Library or other service area, preferably in
education
· Familiarity with a variety of basic IT applications is essential
· Good communication and interpersonal skills are essential
· Flexible, adaptable approach to work with the ability to prioritise your
own workload while working within a team
· Enthusiastic, accurate, methodical and practical approach for providing a
high quality service
General information
The post would suit recent graduates who are seeking work experience before
starting a Postgraduate Library and Information Course.
Please note that, within reason, the duties and role of the postholder may
be changed after appropriate consultation in response to changing
organisational requirements.
The postholder will be eligible to join a contributory occupational pension
scheme USS.
Where the postholder has contact with patients and/or works in a laboratory
s/he is subject to successful pre-employment health screening by UCL’s
Occupational Health Service before their probationary period can be confirmed.
