My understanding is that we are not allowed to search
peoples bags. The guidelines that I was given is that
even if they offer to let you search their bag, you
should not. The approach to take is to ask them to
check their bag - add the normal comments about
batteries, books from other libraries etc. They can
empty the contents out in front of you, if they wish.
I've found it useful to suggest to 'alarm ringers'
that they should go back into the library and check
their bags. This gives them the opportunity to remove
an offending item in private, and allows them to leave
the library quietly.
