 ====================================== Information about NISS Services ==

** Research Councils' Graduate Schools Programme website
   -----------------------------------------------------

NISS provides a hosting and website development service that is already
utilised by a number of organisations and bodies. The UK Research
Councils' Graduate Schools Programme (RCGSP) website has recently been
added to this portfolio of sites and services and is now available at
http://www.gradschools.ac.uk/

As explained on the website, "The Graduate Schools Programme began in 1968
and is now the main provider of personal skills training to postgraduate
students.

Its mission is to be the outstanding, innovative and cost effective
provider of personal and career skills training for postgraduate students
and to make a significant contribution to transferable skills training in
postgraduate education as a whole."

The work of the Graduate Schools Programme falls into six main areas:

* Programme of National Courses
* National Workshops
* Materials Development
* Prime Skills for Engineers
* Collaborative Programmes
* Facilitation Training

The website provides information about the RCGSP and its activities,
including details of its courses throughout the UK and an online
application form.

** DfEE School and College Performance Tables
   ------------------------------------------

NISS also works with the UK Government's Department for Education and
Employment (DfEE) to make its Schools and College Performance Tables
available online. The Tables can be accessed via the page at
http://www.dfee.gov.uk/perform.shtml and data for 2000 will include:

* 2000 Primary School Performance Tables
* 2000 Secondary School Performance Tables
* 2000 School and College (16-18) Performance Tables
* 2000 National Pupil Absence Tables
* 2000 Post-16 Value Added Pilot

With the exception of the Primary Schools Performance Tables all the other
2000 material is now available. The Primary Tables are expected to become
available shortly. The page also provides access to data for 1997, 1998
and 1999.

You can link to the Performance Tables pages as well as other
education-related Governmental sites and information from the NISS page at
http://www.niss.ac.uk/world/ukgovernment.html

** Offer from ComputerWire
   -----------------------

Users suffering withdrawal symptoms following the closure of the NISS
Computergram Service and the absence of daily IT-related news headlines
may be interested in a recent notification from CHEST about an offer for
alternative products from ComputerWire:

"CHEST Data Contacts at all UK Universities should by now have received a
letter from ComputerWire with details of a site licence scheme for access
to various databases; £300 + VAT is the annual cost of a site licence for
ComputerGram International and Network Briefing Daily; £1,000 (+ VAT) is
the annual cost of a site licence for IT Knowledge Centre and Technology
Decision Matrix (this package includes ComputerGram International and
Network Briefing Daily). Full details of ordering and for evaluating
these services are available on the ComputerWire Web Site at
http://www.computerwire.com/chest/ The offer is open to all CHEST Sites,
not only the Higher Education Community.

The ComputerWire products will enable you to keep up to date with latest
developments in the IT, Networking and Internet Industries, to access
research papers used by leading IT Vendors, Corporate IT Departments and
Technology Analysts, and to give access to the Global Analyst Network.
They are aslo useful for students in Computing and Business Studies, and
for students wanting careers in IT, to enable them to attend interviews
with up-to-date knowledge of the IT sector."
