Dear all

EDINA ART ABSTRACTS/VISUAL ARTS DATA SERVICE WORKSHOPS

You are cordially invited to book your place on one of the forthcoming
workshops being offered jointly by EDINA and VADS. The content of the
workshops is as follows:

EDINA Art Abstracts/Art Index Retrospective training

We will provide supported hands-on training in the new EDINA interface to
the Art Abstracts and Art Index Retrospective services, currently being
field tested. Attendees will receive a workbook that compares the new
interface with the old and describes the enhancements that have been made
to the services. The workbook will also cover basic and advanced search
techniques and information about the data content.

Attendees will be able to take away the workbooks to act as a useful
reference back in the workplace. Once any amendments suggested at the
workshops have been incorporated, the workbooks will then be made available
as online learning support material at the EDINA website.

VADS User Services/PICTIVA Project

The workshops will look at the current user services provided by The
Visual Arts Data Service (VADS), a national service for those creating and
using digital resources for research, teaching and learning in the visual
arts. This will include a review of the collections available on VADS,
guidelines on the effective use of these collections and also an
introduction to the enhancements that are currently being developed for the
VADS service.

The enhancements to the VADS services include a number of new collections
and the PICTIVA project. PICTIVA has three major aims: the development of a
range of generic tools to aid the search, selection and retrieval of images
from the VADS collections, the production of teaching and learning materials
to support the use of VADS on-line collections and finally an evaluation of
the tools and materials describing use, user experiences and feedback. These
changes will have a large impact for users of the VADS collections.

***
Workshop arrangements

The workshops will be held at the following locations:

Friday, 21st July John Rylands Library, University of Manchester
Monday, 24th July Tower Hill Building, London Guildhall University
Tuesday, 25th July Main Library Building, University of Edinburgh

All workshops commence at 1.30 pm and finish at 4.30 pm. Light
refreshments will be available during the afternoon. Workshops and
refreshments are free of charge, but please make your own arrangements for
lunch and accommodation, where required.

All workshops will be fully evaluated both on the day and later, when you
are back in the workplace, and the results of those evaluations will be
made available to you.

Places at the workshops are available on a first-come, first-served basis
to any staff who are either supporting or interested in the EDINA Art
Abstracts and Art Index Retrospective services; and any staff members
interested in hearing about the work of VADS. This includes lecturing
staff and researchers who would be interested in coming along.

To book your place:

Administration of these workshops is being co-ordinated by EDINA. Please
complete the form appended to this message and return it to

Best wishes
