Whilst agreeing wholeheartedly with others' comments re NOT likening our
profession to that of Doctors I feel I must query the assumption that we
are paid on a par with teachers. Many Librarians working in education
(schools & FE) do not earn anything like as much as their teaching
colleagues despite having equivalent qualifications and sometimes more
responsibilty (for staff, budgets etc.). You only have to look in the LA
Record to see Learning Resources Managers posts being advertised at ?15 /
?16k whilst teachers without any additional responsibilties can expect to
earn ~?23k after 5 or 6 years of teaching. I know very little about
salaries in Public Libraries but judging by job adverts it would seem that
few Public Librarians with 5 years experience could expect to earn ?23k+.
I am not for a moment suggesting that teachers salaries are generous but
merely pointing out that there is a proportion of the profession who can
only dream of earning a teachers salary!
