The Internet is a vast information resource that also provides a means
of communicating that information with just a click of the mouse. But
not only do you have to tackle the problem of locating relevant Web
resources, you also have to battle with the infoglut that arrives via
email and discussion groups. Suitable for users of information at all
levels, this one day workshop looks at how you can use the Internet more
effectively and efficiently.
The day will focus on search tools and essential search techniques; how
to make more effective use of email; strategies for organising your mail
and Web resources; strategies for searching and filtering discussion
groups; security, privacy and confidentiality issues.
Cost: GBP 195 + VAT (Total cost GBP 229.12). Lunch and refreshments are
included.

10.00 Search tools: types of search tools; how they work; choosing the
right search tool; essential and advanced search techniques; looking for
companies, people, market information, images, country specific and
subject specific information.

11.45 Usenet newsgroups: how they work; how to access them; how to
search Usenet; precautions to take when posting. How to locate, use and
participate in mailing/discussion lists.

13.00 Lunch
13.45 Managing your email: making more use of email as an information
resource and for current awareness; configuring your software; ASCII vs
HTML vs attachments; sending formatted files and programs; virus
checking; how to use filters to automatically sort your messages;
dealing with junk email.

15.15 Organising and managing your bookmarks or favorites. Speeding up
access. Identifying and locating bottlenecks. Monitoring changes to web
pages. Checking the credentials of a Web page.

Throughout the day there will be opportunities to try out some of the
techniques for yourself. Each delegate will receive a comprehensive set
of notes together with a diskette containing a bookmark of essential
sites. Each delegate will have their own PC for the practical sessions.
