There were 5 replies to my enquiry. Thank you to all of you. Solutions were:
BROTHER P TOUCH 8000 (2 sites)
- 6 sizes (10 to 44pt)
- up to 5 lines
- red or black on white or transparent tape
- adhesive on the tapes seems to need reinforcing with 'magic tape' over
the top
AVERY LabelPro
- installed on a PC connected to a laser printer, using appropriate size
Avery label
- Avery will supply trial software which allows you 10 free goes
- address is Avery Office Label, Gardner Rd, Maidenhead SL6 7PU
- *but* can smudge if handled roughly
- labels not really sticky enough for some bindings, which need label
protectors to keep them on
AVERY/WORD
A similar solution, but using a label template in Word with Avery labels of
an appropriate size.
KROY K2500
- hand-held machine, font sizes 8 to 72pt
- adhesion is said to be good
- 5 lines of text in 12pt
- cost about 250 pounds a year ago
- battery operated with rechargeable batteries
- makes it possible to take the machine to the shelves to re-label in
situ
- main drawback is that keyboard is alphabetical, not qwerty, and rather
small. Also some keys tend to stick
