Dear Colleagues,
I am writing to you today with an update about JSTOR
subscriptions for UKFE institutions, UKHE institutions, and
UK Research Councils.
HIGHER EDUCATION
On 28/7/00, JISC Circular 06/00 was mailed to all HIGHER
Education Institutions. The text of this circular is
available online at http://www.jisc.ac.uk/pub00/c06_00.html
The circular asks whether UKHEIs wish to participate in a
JISC agreement with JSTOR for their new General Science
Collection. Institutional responses are requested by 11
August.
RESEARCH COUNCILS
On Friday, JISC Circular 06/00 was also mailed to all
UK Research Councils. The text of this circular is
available online at http://www.jisc.ac.uk/pub00/c06_00.html
The circular asks whether Research Councils wish to
participate in a JISC agreement with JSTOR for their new
General Science Collection. Institutional responses are
requested by 11 August.
Please note that Research Council subscription fees for
both the Arts and Science I collection and the General
Science Collection are being assessed on a case by case
basis and depend on anticipated levels of use. Please
contact CHEST for more information, as they have been asked
to liaise with the JISC Secretariat about Research Council
subscription costs.
FURTHER EDUCATION
Please note that the JSTOR circular is NOT being sent to
FURTHER Education Institutions. Although we had originally
anticipated that this circular would go to FEIs, JCEI
members have decided to treat JSTOR in the same way
as other current content in the DNER collections. This
means that rather than negotiating new terms for FE
with JSTOR in an ad hoc fashion, we will wait
until:
a) ongoing consultation with the FE community identifies
where JSTOR ranks in the list of FE priorities
b) JISC's Charging Working Group reports back with a
model for calculating subscription fees for FEIs.
JISC policy regarding FE subscriptions to the JSTOR
Arts and Science Collection I in the interim is that FEIs
may subscribe if they are able to pay the subscription rate
currently charged for "very small" HEIs. For more
information about JSTOR and the agreement, please see:
http://www.chest.ac.uk/datasets/jstor/overview.html
and
http://www.jstor.ac.uk/news/releases/gensci.release.pdf
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any
questions or if you would like any additional information.
Cheers for now,
Alicia
