GUTENBERG: THE MAN AND HIS ERA
SATURDAY, 7 OCTOBER
VENUE: THE CONFERENCE CENTRE
TIME: 13.30-16.30
Johann Gutenberg's invention created radically new conditions for the
diffusion of ideas, information, and artistic styles throughout Europe.
Printing became an essential part of European scientific, religious and
political life, but it also provided things to read for entertainment.
We will discuss some of the questions which are often asked about the
invention of printing. Why was it invented, where and when? How did it
really work? What were the effects of printing on European culture?
There will also be an opportunity to take part in a demonstration of
typesetting and the operation of a small printing press.
