I am seeking help with the following query. A volunteer
working in The Fawcett Library has uncovered a reference as
follows:
An Athenian Badminton Library, by Madeleine Greenwood,
published in Shafts, 4 (2) February 1896, page 14.
Shafts was a progressive/radical women's periodical of the
1890s.
The article refers to a project, begun in October 1894, to
set up a circulating library in Athens. What
we do not understand is the reference to badminton. Was
this then a slang generic term for circulating libraries?
(perhaps a reference to the back-and-forth nature of the
game?).
We would be very grateful to receive any responses to
explain this reference.
