In the London Review of Books for January 6, in an article about the romance
publishers Mills and Boon ("Uplifting Lust" great title!) there are passing
references to commercial libraries in the UK: "...the ubiquitous two-penny
libraries which flourished in the Thirties..." and "...in the Sixties with
the paperback revolution and the collapse of the big commercial
librararies..." Could somone give this colonial a quick rundown on the
topic? I don't think we had similar institutions in this country- they
sound like an an analog of our 19th century commercial libraries that mostly
did not survive the advent of the publically funded library...
Chris- sad day...
Many thanks!
