Netskills Workshop:
Managed Learning Environments with WebCT
09:30 - 16:30 Thursday 12th October 2000 University of Newcastle
With the increasing sophistication of learning and teaching
material on the World Wide Web, and the high expectations
of students, both on campus and through distance learning,
about the use of new technology, many educational organisations
are turning to Managed (or Virtual) Learning Environments.
These web-based environments offer not only facilities to
structure learning content, but also provide student management,
communication and assessment tools, and a range of other useful
functions.
This is a practical workshop aimed at lecturers, teachers,
learning technologists or support staff who have used the
web for learning and teaching and wish to explore the
sophisticated features offered by managed learning
environments. Whilst this workshop is based around WebCT,
many features and concepts are equally applicable to
other learning environments.
Workshop Content:
The workshop will comprise presentations, demonstrations and
hands-on sessions with opportunities for questions and discussion.
Participants will each receive a workbook which contains workshop
exercises, presentation slides and other relevant materials.
Topics covered will include:
* Facilities for communication and collaboration
* Progress tracking
* Navigation and linking content
* Uploading content
* Adding external links
* Changing course look and feel
* Creating a searchable linked glossary
* Timed online quizzes
* Marking/grading
* Student management facilities
By the end of the workshop participants will have:
* Seen WebCT from student, designer and administrator views.
* Created and uploaded content including existing Word and PowerPoint
files.
* Explored sequencing, navigation and linking facilities.
* Applied their own look and feel to a course
* Investigated facilities for progress tracking
* Used automatic indexing and searching tools.
* Created an online quiz and explored marking and feedback functions.
Workshop Requirements:
Participants should have previously used the World Wide Web,
and be aware of the advantages and disadvantages of using
the internet for learning and teaching. No knowledge of HTML
or other web technologies is assumed, although participants
who have some basic experience in creating web pages will
find it useful. Use of Microsoft Windows and applications
such as Word and PowerPoint would also be useful. Participants
new to educational use of the internet might wish to first
attend the complementary Netskills workshop Using the Internet
for Learning and Teaching.
The cost of the workshop is £ 110 for participants from higher and
further education. The workshop fee for other public sector
participants is
£ 135 and the fee for commercial and business sector participants is
£ 195.
Note: Costs include lunch, morning coffee and afternoon tea.
