Dear ILL folk
As I understand there are two letters from BLDSC, one which went to the
CHief Librarians and one which they are mailing about now to the ILL
people like us.
I have been asked by our Librarian here to do some sums to work out if
we can how it may affect us. I think we will be looking to borrow from
other libraries when we know that they have got something rather than
go to BLDSC as our first port of call.
One thing I would like to know - we sent a request for an X search and
it came back with a location on it (the same as we had found on COPAC)-
will BLDSC charge us for the location when we haven't asked for it?
I also think that this change and the one to the Transport Schemes have
been forced on the BLDSC by the Treasury and the DCMS. They have only
looked at BLDSC costs and not at a wider picture. I feel a bit sorry
that we weren't able to put a view from the whole library profession to
say why it is important to keep an efficient ILL system for the whole
country and how facilitating the exchange of information between the
different sectors is the task of the National Library which is what
BLDSC is. Perhaps we should be thinking of ways to try to influence
the people who are really responsible for these decisions?
