We have been going all out over the last 18 months to make our e-
journals visible, but we still have a long way to go in terms of user
education. Some subject disciplines, especially in the arts, just
don't like the idea. Scientists, lawyers, engineers, education and
economists, and healthcare workers have been the heaviest users
so far - we hope to target philosophers and historians this session
with a bit more publicity!
I have created a page at www.leeds.ac.uk/library/ejourn which acts
as a starting point for browsing and searching of titles - all of which
are in the library catalogue. Since the resdesign of our site we
also have local information pages for individual titles and/or
packages of titles where appropriate. This at least has increased
the volume of enquiries on e-js.
We have also put links in from Faculty team subject pages to
ejourn in the hope of directing people in the right direction. Also,
we are developing hybrid libraries for some disciplines which
include direct access to online journal articles, all of which helps
raise the profile of journal titles.
On databases - we have links into our catalogue and online
subscriptions from CSA (free to subscribers), Edina (free), ADS
(free), Web of Science and OVID. This has proved problematic as
they rely on ISSNs (and some publishers have print and electronic
ISSNs - which to choose?) but is at least a slight improvement.
Best wishes
Louise
# We are finding at the Didsbury site that, in spite of our
#encouragement both at the Enquiry Desk and during induction and
#research sessions, our students are not using our e-journals as
#much as they could be and so we are looking for ways of
#promoting them.We are thinking at the moment in terms of a
#printed leaflet and something on the library web site. I would be
#interested to hear about what others have done in this area and
#whether it's been successful.
#Also, is anyone aware of a method by which we could flag up on
#the electronic databases those e-journal titles to which we have a
#subscription? (I realise there would be a charge for this if such a
#sevice existed).
