Dear LIHNN Members,
Further to Diane Keenan's message to the list earlier this week and
for the benefit of any others who may be experiencing problems
accessing our catalogue on the web I have received some advice from
our systems manager, which may be helpful to you.
TALIS our library catalogue is generally available on the internet
and is not protected from external use with any kind of firewall
etc because we want people to be able to access and use it
worldwide. Therefore if you do experience any general ongoing
problems with access they will most likely be due to locally set
network firewalls or permissions, which is naturally a particular
issue in the NHS! (The exception will of course be if our server
unexpectedly crashes or we have to have downtime for any reason but
this would manifest itself as a short term access problem only).
Our advice is to contact your local network manager with the
following information about the URL of our catalogue:
The TALISWeb Search Screen URL is
http://library.man.ac.uk:8001/www-bin/www_talis/
The port number 8001 is different from the usual web
server port which is 80. To allow catalogue search requests
through, Network administrators will need to adjust their firewall
settings, otherwise catalogue users will find that they can only see
the menu frame on the left of the catalogue but not the main search
screen. Other brands of library catalogues will probably seem to
work OK as this set up is a particular feature of the TALIS software
which is produced by BLCMP. It cannot be altered by JRULM.
I would also like to let you know that if you do experience any
problems with access to any of our information services, we would
really like to hear from you direct! Often we can solve problems
quite quickly as we've seen them before and for new ones we simple
won't know there is a problem unless you tell us! All of the
relevant contact details were listed in my recent message describing
the Health Sciences Team and other contacts at JRULM, but for
convenience the main one for technical issues like this
is The JRULM Technical Help Desk 0161 275 7388 or e-mail

Hope this helps
