Dear all,
The SECTA Report's 9th recommendation was around the need to develop end-user skills. HCLU has not really been in a position to take this forward during the last 12 months or so. However, as we are about to be fully staffed, I thought we should begin to explore this issue.
Colin and I met with David Brigden last week. David Brigden is part of the Mersey Deanery and is responsible for developing and organising a wide range of generic courses for doctors. Examples are:
- Interview skills
- Communication skills
- IT for the terrified
- Handling the media
Most of these courses are delivered via traditional means (i.e. in the classroom) but David is also working on course material that will be delivered via the Internet.
I hope that you will recall that we circulated the list of these courses to you a little while ago. These courses are open to non-doctors - but they fill up v quickly.
It seemed to me that this was an opportunity for the librarians in the region to develop some semi-formal courses with David Brigden. My first thoughts were around the following:
- Critical appraisal skills
- Finding the evidence (broad look at information / databases)
- Getting the best out of the Internet
- Specific databases (Medline; Cochrane; BNI...)
David Brigden would like us to develop a short proposal to pilot this via the Mersey Deanery.
I think this is an exciting opportunity to develop information handling skills courses across the region - designed and lead by librarians - which are part of other programmes - rather than "stand-alone".
I would like to form a small project team that would be willing to develop the broad course outline, the course content, identify people who could deliver courses, course locations and course evaluation processes. I would envisage this team being no more than 6 - 8 people. It would be useful to include those of you who have already developed training sessions in some of these areas.
If you are interested in being part of this project please let me know by the end of August.
With best wishes,
David
