Dear all
This is forwarded to you by request from Veronica Fraser.
Please let me know if you have any difficulty with reading this or if
any parts of the message are missing.
I have been having trouble with truncated email messages and
parts missing from the middle, differences between what I see on
screen adn what prints out and I and my IT colleagues here trying
to diagnose the cause. the latest theory is that it is to do with
lines in messages sent not wrapping round.
thanks
Valerie

NATIONAL STATISTICS - LAUNCH ON 7 JUNE
1. You will wish to know that the new National Statistics
arrangements following last autumn's White Paper Building trust in
statistics are to be launched on 7 June. Please cascade this note
as appropriate.
Immediate impact 2. The new arrangements will not greatly alter the
way in which we handle statistical publications over the next few
months. Key points are:
§ The existing Official Statistics Code of Practice will continue to
apply, until it is superseded by a new "National Statistics Code of
Practice" and associated release arrangements in a few months time.
Ministers and colleagues will have the opportunity to comment on
these documents in draft. When the new arrangements are
established, we will provide briefing/training events;
§ A new National Statistics logo will be included on publications
which are within the scope of "National Statistics". Ministers have
decided that the scope will cover the majority of the Department's
regular statistical publications, with the exception of some key
hospital activity and NHS workforce figures (pending agreement of
the new Code). All existing publications will continue;
§ A Statistics Commission is being established, with the powers to
examine and comment publicly on the quality and integrity of
National Statistics. While we do not know what the Commission's
priorities will be, we will need to document the way in which we
reach decisions about release, in case they probe the Department's
statistics.
§ A new National Statistics Website is to be established at
www.statistics.gov.uk. It is the intention to provide free access
to all National Statistics across Whitehall through this site,
including links to departmental sites as necessary.
Further information 3. Further documentation about the new
arrangements, including Q & A briefing for staff, is available on
the Statistics Intranet site. Launch Packs will be provided on a
selective basis in addition. This material has primarily been
designed for staff working on statistical publications: I recommend
that you speak to Greg Phillpotts (SKH ext. 25795) if you have any
queries.
