KINGS FUND Senior Managers Programme
Invitation to apply for financial assistance for the Kings Fund Management Development Programme
Hugh Richards, SMP leader, has kindly agreed to honour Andy Richards offer of a heavily subsidised place on this key management development programme and RLG colleagues are invited to nominate a senior member of staff, or themselves for a place on the September course.
The offer: the total cost of the programme is c £6,000. The Kings Fund are offering a place at 50% discount less £500. The Librarian Development Programme will meet all but £500 of the cost.
The candidate will have to identify £1,000 towards the cost. This can be a personal investment or support from employer.
We will notify Hugh Richards of a preselected candidate who will be interviewed by him (probably in mid July). This will be arranged by his PA Sue Churchill.
The Programme begins in September and the successful candidate will need clearance for time off to attend from their employer. The programme is a mixture of residential study and activity and own time learning. It is a multidisciplinary programme and we see one of the advantages being that a senior librarian will be involved in shared learning and development with colleagues from a wide range of disciplnes within the NHS.
Applicants should be working in a library or information service that is directly or indirectly funded by the NHS and supports NHS staff in their clinical work, education and training or research. The successful applicant will be expected to contribute (as far as is reasonable) to the health and lis professional press (and relevant conferences) on their experience in the SMP. It is likely that the successful applicant will have been working in an NHS related service for at least one year as a senior librarian/information professional (with or without formal qualifications), working at a level that involves some region wide activity. We would expect applicants to demonstrate current or recent CPD activity and contribution to the profession. Endorsement by a Regional Director is not required but we would expect applicants to have discussed their application with their Regional Librarian. Please indicate feedback or support on the application.
RLG has established an interview panel comprising
Veronica Fraser, Michael Carmel, Valerie Ferguson and Martin Staniforth. ( I will check with each if they are still able to do this and RLG may make further suggestions for referees and conditions that candidates should meet)
Candidates are asked to submit a brief paper in support of their application giving details of their current role, their career aspirations and how they intend to build on the SMP programme to both develop their own CPD and their contribution to the profession. An indication of employer support (release and financial) will also be required as early as possible.
If there is no suitable candidate found in the time available, it is possible that we can have a deferred place for the next programme which begins in February 2001. We would need to deposit the LDP monies for this with the Kings Fund.
Further general information about the SMP will be available directly from the Kings Fund and from Veronica Fraser. Please circulate to appropriate members of your networks as soon as possible.
Closing date for application June 16th 2000-05-24
Please email to Veronica Fraser
NB Please indicate if you can start the programme in September or February.
