Dear All,
Following feedback from some of you with regard to difficulties
students have accessing their University of Manchester e-mail
while based off campus I requested some guidance from the
Medical Schools Computer Support Manager, Colin Ashcroft. He
has now produced a helpful guide which he intends to issue to
all the staff and students of the Faculty of Medicine Dentistry
and Nursing. I am sending it to you (see below) so that you
are also in a better position to advise University of Manchester
students and staff as I know that you can often be their first
port of call!
Hope you find it helpful. Please don't hesitate to contact me
if there is anything else I can to to help.
Best wishes
Katy

READING YOUR E-MAIL WHILE OFF CAMPUS
INTRODUCTION :
I'm sure many of you want to continue to read your e-mail while working off campus.
Having your mail forwarded to another e-mail account has often been seen as the
easiest way to achieve this in the past and this is still possible, but there is a simple
way to read your PEGASUS MAIL including access to all your mail folders.
ACCESS TO PEGASUS MAIL FROM ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD !
Using any web browser e.g. Netscape or Internet Explorer. you can visit
http://www.mcc.ac.uk/support/dialup/pmail.htm
The first time you use this service from any new computer you will have to click
the Quick Start link for the browser you are using - the Step by Step instructions
are there to help you the very first time you do this.
IF YOU ARE NOT SURE which browser you are using try clicking on Help and
then About and this will tell you the Name and version e.g. Netscape Commuicator 4.7
Having configured the browser you can click on the
Pegasus Mail link in the section at the bottom of the page Running Pegasus Mail
You may get a message asking you if you want to open a file or save it
you must choose OPEN
You will then see a message ICA opening connection and after a few messages flash
up and disappear you will see the familiar campus 'blue login screen'
Type in your usual Username and then choose Winpmail
you will be prompted for your usual password.
You can now use Pegasus Mail just as if you were still on campus
and can see all your old mail folders.
When you have finished close Pegasus as normal.
ALTERNATIVES:
1.
If you are working at a site which does not allow free Internet browsing or
you do not want to use the above method an alternative choice is configuring
an e-mail client on site to read mail from Manchester.
Any client which reads POP3 protocol mail will do - these include MS Outlook ( and
Outlook Express), Netscape mail, Eudora etc.
The information you require to READ any new MAIL is :-
your standard username (thats the one that is something like MMMR7XYZ)
and your usual password
Your e-mail server Internet address (POP3 address)
e.g. FS2.SCG.MAN.AC.UK for most students
and FS1.SCG.MAN.AC.UK for Stopford based staff
If in doubt please contact the Helpdesk make sure you can quote your
Staff or Student number to prevent any confusion. You may also have to
complete sections containing your e-mail address and personal indentification.
To be able to SEND new mail or REPLY to messages you have just read you also
have to configure an SMTP protocol mail host. While off campus this CANNOT
be one of the Manchester Campus hosts, you must obtain this information from
the computer support staff at the site you are working from.
Once you have entered this information you will be able to send and receive mail
BUT if you have stored old mail in Pegasus mail folders you will NOT be able to
read these - only the method described at the top of this message will allow you
to do that. In addition any mail you read while off site will be stored locally not at
Manchester.
2.
If you are working on a site with no Internet Access but do have a computer with a
modem installed and a free telephone outlet then you can use the Manchester
Computing Dialup service RAM is available to all staff and students.
It has a UK local call number for access and no annual charge
For information and to Register for access visit
