Dear All,
Please note the deadline for applications to this workshop has been
extended to May 1st.

Workshop for health psychology researchers

Nothing is more practical than a good theory: Exploring, testing, and
applying theories in health psychology

Prof. Marie Johnston from the University of St. Andrews (Scotland) and
Prof. John Weinman from King's College London (England), will teach in the
next workshop organised by CREATE (Collaborative REsearch And Training in
the EHPS). The title of this three-day workshop is "Nothing is more
practical than a good theory: Exploring, testing, and applying theories in
health psychology". After the success of the first workshop organised by
CREATE in Florence, Italy, in September 1999, this workshop promises to be
an excellent learning experience for early career health psychology
researchers.

The Workshop at a Glance

§ What: Nothing is more practical than a good theory: Exploring, testing,
and applying theories in health psychology (see www.ehps.net/create for
content)
§ When: 13-15 August, 2000
§ Where: Noordwijk, The Netherlands; Accommodation: at the workshop venue,
Dfl. 50 per person per night w/o breakfast
§ How to apply: download the application form at www.ehps.net/create;
workshop fee: Dfl. 125; deadline May 1st

Theory Put into Practice

Each day of the workshop will focus on a different theme:

1. Using general theoretical frameworks in health psychology
§ The rationale for theory building and theory-driven research in health
psychology will be discussed
§ What are the advantages of general theories over disease-specific or
implicit theories for use in illness populations?
§ Examples of health psychology research that use a general theoretical
framework will be discussed
§ What are the characteristics of useful theories for application in health
psychology research?
§ Recent developments and thinking about cause and effect in health
psychology will be discussed

2. Measurement, design, and methodological issues in testing theories
§ What role can methodology play in the development of theories?
§ What is causality and how can we test for it?
§ What are useful methodologies for longitudinal research?
§ Recent developments in methodology

3. Translating theory driven findings into intervention type research
§ What is the health-related significance of the theories we use?
§ How can we evaluate the effects of an intervention using a particular
theory?
§ What are examples of theory-based intervention programmes?
§ What can we learn about our theories from intervening with them?

CREATE is very happy that Prof. Johnston and Prof. Weinman agreed to teach
in the workshop. Both scholars have earned much respect for their academic
work, and have excellent reputations as teachers. Detailed information on
the content of the workshop can be found on the CREATE website
(www.ehps.net/create).

Early Career Health Psychologists Welcome

The workshop is open to all early career health psychologists. CREATE gives
preference to postgraduate health psychology students or those who already
have a postgraduate qualification in health psychology (but for no longer
than 3 years). EHPS membership is required as well as adequate command of
the English language.

Time and Place

The workshop will take place on the three days (13-15 August) preceding the
EHPS conference in Leiden, The Netherlands (16 -18 August 2000). The
workshop venue will be a guesthouse situated near the beach. The guesthouse
provides kitchen and bar facilities, which gives participants the
opportunity to socialise in an informal environment.

How to Apply?

The application fee is Dfl. 125. Electronic application is possible via
CREATE web page (www.ehps.net/create), where you can download an
application form. The application deadline is May 1st, 2000 (Please note
that this deadline has been extended because many EHPS members did not
receive our first announcement). Early application is recommended, because
places in the workshop are limited. Please contact CREATE
([log in to unmask]) if you need additional information, or call
Michael Echteld at +31-655863123.

Accommodation Overlooking the North Sea

The organisers of the EHPS conference in Leiden arranged for cheap
accommodation at the workshop venue: Dfl. 50 per person per night, without
breakfast. The accommodation is reserved for CREATE workshop participants,
but participants are free to choose alternative accommodation. Please note
that all workshop participants must also stay in this guesthouse during the
EHPS conference itself-transportation to and from Leiden will be arranged.
