Hi all,
This thread seems to have sparked a chord with many people on the list.
As to the rigor of the question - it is very difficult to provide
effective comparison of 2 different experiences - online v. face to face
teaching - but there is an increasing amount of research emerging.
Perhaps the original question need to be redefined by ILT members on
this list?
I have a range of Bookmarks on the subject & present a few below which
may be of use. Non are specifically my work - although i have
contributed to a few, it's obviously up to each user to decide on their
usefulness.
A HEFCE/Jisc Funded Project report A Framework for Pedagogical
Evaluation of Virtual Learning Environments
is available at: http://www.jtap.ac.uk/reports/htm/jtap-041.html This
provides a discussion of many issues related to virtual learning
environments and some of the software used.
The Computer Based Collaborative Group Work project
http://collaborate.shef.ac.uk/ from the university of Sheffield provides
a bibliography & links to many related studies in the area, and details
of their M.Ed. in Networked Learning. Wihtin the resources section -
examples you'll even find a short summary of some work I've been doing

A negative slant which looked at students experiences can be found at:

You might also be interested in some other mailing lists which focus on
this area (although there does seem to be wide interest in ILT);
