I have recently joined the list (within the last 7 days). I
have a couple of
comments to contribute to this discussion.
Here at GCU we run a modular Distance Learning programme for
nurses (many of whom were last in formal education several years ago). The
programme leads to DipHE(Nursing), covering both Scottish Degree Level 2 and
Level 3
Modules.
In the "olden days" much of Nurse Education was didactic, so
these folks are
to some extent used to being told both the "what" and "how
to" learn. Our
students are expected to cope with Level 2 work from the
outset.
We have adopted several strategies to facilitate this:
* All students are given an activities-based
"Preparation to Return to
Study" a few weeks before they begin the course proper.
* Depending on their academic achievements prior to
admission,
students might be required to undertake guided study (with
Formative written
feedback) which focuses on current professional themes. This
is done before
the course proper begins.
* All modules on the course are delivered via the
Internet using a
Problem-based Learning approach. A broad range of "ready to
use" learning
resources (such as the extensive database of relevant web
sites) is
available on our home site. We also have various examples of
prose material
(modified traditional classroom handouts) online.
* All modules have written Formative assignments and
one written
Summative assignment. We try to ensure that comprehensive
written feedback is given for each piece of work.
* Each week we have live, synchronous, text based
online tutorials.
These are recorded and transcribed online each week. These
are supplemented by asynchronous, online threaded discussions.
* Students undertake substantial hands-on clinical
practice (mentored
by an experienced clinician). We use this practical
experience to support a
Reflective Practitioner (a la Schön) approach to both the
"theory" and
"practice" competencies / learning outcomes.
* Academic, pastoral and professional support is
readily available by
telephone and email.
