ESRC CASE PhD studentship available from October 2000:
"Post 2001 indicators of deprivation for primary
health care planning"
Supervisors: Professor David Martin, Department of
Geography, University of Southampton, and Dr Natasha
Huff, Brighton and Hove Primary Care Group
Quantitative indicators of social deprivation based
on census data play an important role in the allocation
of health care resources down to small geographical
areas. Much work has been done on the calculation
and interpretation of such measures, but their
sensitivity to the geographical areas used has not been
adequately addressed. Results of the 2001 census will
involve not only new data, but new geographical areas
resulting from the use of GIS-based automated zone
design techniques. This project seeks evaluate the
impact of 2001 census geography on deprivation indicators
for small geographical areas. The work will be primarily
concerned with primary health care organisation, but will
have relevance and implications for all similar
applications.
An ESRC CASE studentship has been awarded to this
project, providing maintenance of £7995 in 2000/01.
The ideal candidate will have a Masters degree in GIS,
Social Statistics or a related discipline.
