Sandy Steacy's announcement of a vacancy at Ulster on 'Fluid Flow in
Heterogeneous Media' reminds me that we have three vacancies here at
BGS in Edinburgh, two of them in a related field. Unfortunately, none
of my colleagues has posted that fact on this mailing list. I'm
appending the details. They have been advertised in the press and on
the web for some time, so please note that
THE CLOSING DATE IS THIS MONDAY, 31st January.
If any of the posts is of interest to someone and this is the first
they've heard, I suggest they call Marion Squires immediately. I'm
sure she will do all she can to help them have their application
considered.

Replies/enquiries to Marion Squires, please, not to me!

You will be based in the Edinburgh Anisotrophy Project (EAP) team,
which has an international reputation as a rich source of scientific
ideas in advanced seismic methods. You are expected to have expertise
in multi-component seismics and seismic anisotropy and the ability to
generate innovative research ideas and demonstrate their relevance
through application to industry datasets. Strong communication skills
are expected because of the need to interact regularly with the
industry sponsers. Applicants will have a first-class or upper second
BSc and an MSc in geophysics. A PhD in geophysics would be
desirable. Experience of presenting papers at scientific and industry
conference?s is essential, as is a record of publications in
internationally refereed journals.

GEOPHYSICIST - REF HSO/GSG/MH/00/1
An opportunity has arisen for a geophysicist to work on a research
project funded through the NERC Micro-to-Macro programme. You will
work with a team to develop theories of seismic wave propogation in
fractured and porous rock and to devise innovative techniques to
predict fluid flow properties from field seismic and well log data
supplied by industrial sponsors. You will be expected to publish the
results of your research in internationally refereed journals and be
required to make presentations at conferences. You will develop
collaborative links with scientists in universities and industry and
be encouraged to take advantage of opportunities to develop proposals
to attract additional funding for research. The project is allied
with the Edinburgh Anisotropy Project and you will work closely with
members of that project team.
In addition to a first class or upper second class degree applicants
will have an MSc or PhD in geophysics and postdoctural or industry
experience, and have a good record of publications in refereed
journals. You will be a good communicator with excellent
presentational skills. Knowledge of seismic wave propogation theory
and numerical modelling is essential, and experience in seismic data
processing will be advantageous. You will also be competent in
programming in C/C++ and/or FORTRAN.
Starting salary will be £17,000 per annum. Future increases are
performance related. Benefits include a non-contributory pension
scheme and child-care allowance, 25 days annual leave and 10½ days
