Stuart F Simmons
PhD Scholarship in Economic Geology
Geology Deparment, University of Auckland
A PhD Scholarship in Economic Geology is available to carry out research
on the genesis of low sulfidation epithermal Au-Ag veins in the Atacama
Desert, northern Chile. The investigation will focus on the physical
and chemical controls of epithermal bonanza mineralization, the effects
of arid weathering and oxidation on Au-Ag mobility, and the regional
relationships between low sulfidation mineralization and high
sulfidation alteration. This is a strongly field-oriented study
involving documentation of mineral occurrences and textures in
underground and surface exposures, and drill core. Lab work will
include thin section petrography, XRD and microprobe analyses, and fluid
inclusion and isotope measurements. Meridian Gold is sponsoring the
scholarship for three years; it includes remuneration of ~$NZ
20K-25K/annum, and covers all travel and field related expenses. The
successful applicant will have their tuition fees covered for a period
of 3 years no matter the country of citizenship. This is an excellent
opportunity for a professionally-minded student looking to extend their
experience in mineral exploration-related research in South America, as
well as improve their understanding of active geothermal systems. The
successful applicant will have a BSc (Hons) or an MSc (Hons) degree in
Geology, a strong self-disciplined work ethic, and be able to execute
the work in a timely manner. Applicants should request an application
form and send their CV to Stuart F. Simmons, Geothermal Institute,
University of Auckland, Private Bag 92019, Auckland, New Zealand;
[log in to unmask], phone 64-9-373-7599 ext 8710, fax
64-9-373-7436. At least three letters of reference and a statement of
research-career interests will be required with the application.
