Clay Mineralogist
Department of Mineralogy
Tenure Track Position
The Department of Mineralogy is looking for a
geoscientist with experience of low-temperature
mineralogy, especially clays, who will particularly
contribute to our research on mineral systematics
and environmental mineralogy but may also
contribute to our work on soils, ores or meteorites.
You will be expected to initiate and conduct
research, seek research funds, and contribute to
projects and commissioned research within our
consultancy activities.
You must have a BSc in Geology or an equivalent
earth science degree, as well as a proven
research record. Experience of clay mineral
analysis, related instrumentation and computing
are also essential.
A PhD and one year's post-doctoral research work
on clay mineralogy would be desirable.
The starting salary, to be reviewed in August, will
be from GBP17,837 depending on qualifications
and experience. The Museum benefits include a
non-contributory pension scheme, training and
development and a generous leave entitlement of
25 days.

JOB DESCRIPTION
The overall purpose of the job is for a versatile geoscientist to act as
our departmental IT Manager and to contribute to our collections management
team. You will be expected to maintain and develop our IT resources working
in collaboration with the Museum's central IT group, and to help database
and curate our collections.
Main Tasks and Responsibilities
1. To develop and maintain the IT base of the Department
2. To contribute to corporate IT activities on behalf of the Department
3. To help curate data databases, integrate them and link them to
collection databases
4. To develop and maintain related Web presence
5. To develop ways of generation income from our data
6. To undertake curatorial duties
7. To undertake corporate duties as required
QUALIFICATIONS and EXPERIENCE
Essential
1. A B.Sc in Geology or an equivalent physical science degree
2. IT skills, gained at postgraduate level, specifically in development
and troubleshooting on Windows 95/NT-based computers in a networked
environment.
Desirable
1. An IT Diploma or equivalent
2. Experience in Database construction, handling and integration
3. Experience of Curation
