low-temperature geochemistry. This appointment will complement and enhance
the existing departmental strengths in economic geology, geochemistry,
hydrogeology, and analytical geology.

The Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences has an international
reputation for excellence in teaching and research. The successful candidate
will be expected to teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate level.
The successful candidate will also be expected to enhance that reputation by
establishing an innovative, rigorous and externally funded research program
that will include the supervision of M.Sc. and Ph.D. candidates and
interaction with other faculty members who are engaged in related research
programs. Field experience would be an asset.

The department is exceptionally well equipped; thus, the individual will
have ready access to a modern electron microprobe, scanning electron
microscope, and mass spectrometry laboratories. Detailed information on the
faculty and facilities in the department can be found on the World Wide Web
at: http://www.ualberta.ca/EAS.

The appointment for this position will be at the Assistant Professor level.
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. degree at the time of appointment, have a
proven research record, and demonstrate excellence in teaching. The
appointment will commence on July 1, 2000 provided that a suitable candidate
can be found.

Applications, including a resume and a statement of research interests and
teaching philosophy, should be addressed to: Dr. Brian Jones, Chair,
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, University of Alberta,
Edmonton, Alberta, T6G 2E3, Canada (Fax: 780-492-8190). Applications by
e-mail will be declined. Applicants must provide the names and addresses of
three people who would be willing to provide CONFIDENTIAL letters of
reference in support of your application. Deadline for receipt of
applications and letters of reference is February 15, 2000.

In accordance with Canadian Immigration requirements, priority will be given
to Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada. If suitable Canadian
citizens and permanent residents cannot be found, other individuals will be
considered.

The University of Alberta is committed to the principle of equity in
employment. As an employer, we welcome diversity in the workplace and
encourage applications from all qualified women and men, including
Aboriginal peoples, persons with disabilities, and members of visible
minorities.
