I want to draw your attention to an amazing initiative that I believe gives
great opportunities for teachers and students, as well as professional
geoscientists. A Canadian mining company, Goldcorp, is in the process of
developing an important new gold mine in Canada. It is making all technical
data available (geology, geophysics, geochemistry), with visualisation
software - all for free. They have issued a challenge in the form of a
competition to use their data to produce the best exploration plan to find
more ore. The competition is open to anyone, anywhere, and to groups. There
are 28 prizes with a total value of US$500,000. The largest individual prize
is valued at US$95,000.
All information is available on the Goldcorp website, www.goldcorp.com -
just click on "The Challenge"
Here is an opportunity to use a major real data set on an important new
mine, PLUS the opportunity to win some substantial prizes. This is a totally
new approach by a mining company and even if you do not want to enter the
competition, the data set must be a valuable teaching aid. Why not encourage
students, friends and colleagues to enter, or form a syndicate to enter
jointly? It could be fun and rewarding!
Best wishes
Noel
