Helen Ashby, Registrar at the National Railway Museum in York, will be
joining mda on a six week secondment under the Sharing Museum Skills in the
Millennium Awards scheme. This project, funded by the Millennium Commission
(and administered by a consortium consisting of the Museums and Galleries
Commission, the Museums Association, the Association of Independent Museums,
the National Museum
Directors' Conference and the Committee of Area Museum Councils) is designed
to enable staff and volunteers in museums to "share, learn and apply new
skills". Further details are available at the Sharing Museum Skills website
(www.smsma.org.uk).
mda will benefit enormously from Helen's expertise and we would be delighted
to hear from others interested in sharing their expertise with us and
learning more about the work of mda and the ever-increasing importance of
information management in museums and cultural organisations. In particular,
we are keen to hear from people who can bring their experience to bear in
the development of the third edition of SPECTRUM, the UK Museum
Documentation Standard. New technologies are providing increasing
opportunities to capture, preserve and share information. These issues
affect curators, collections managers, conservators and educators as well as
marketing and business staff, webmasters and senior managers.
Applications are assessed on a quarterly basis with the next round closing
on 10 February (followed by 10 May). If you would be interested in proposing
a placement with mda to the SMSMA scheme please get in contact with me so
that we can discuss possible projects.
