The British Museum COMPASS website went live yesterday at http://www.thebritishmuseum.ac.uk/compass.
The website is a taster of what is to come... We have deliberately designed a web system that can be used on low end PCs, without the use of plug-ins. We have also incorporated many features to make the system more accessible, particularly to users with visual impairments.
In December, the Queen opens the Great Court and the restored Reading Room here at the Museum, where there will be 50 wide screen terminals with the on-site version of COMPASS. Using the Museum's internal network will allow us to provide 3d reconstructions, animations and video.
Although we are sure that the site will be used as a valuable educational resource as it is, in the new year specific areas aimed at children and teachers will both be launched on the web. The teachers' area will include educational resources designed around the National Curriculum, and provide the facility to store and rearrange information for educational purposes. Both the children's and teachers' areas will include on and off line activities such as quizzes, puzzles, games and worksheets.
Do have a look at the site and let us have any comments or recommendations, either directly to myself or by filling in our online questionnaire (under 'More About Compass'). Also get in touch if you want a copy of our press release, or any further information.
