Subject: Development in Danger Summit
Date sent: Wed, 07 Jun 2000 05:52:53 PDT
The 'Development in Danger' conference has been arranged by the UK based NGO
WORLDwrite in conjunction with the Royal Commonwealth Society. In
specialist-led discussions, panellists will take a fresh look at Western
ideas and decisions that are shaping life in the developing world and
threaten developmental prospects. The conference will consist of three key
panel discussions on genetically modified organisms, child labour and global
citizenship. Presentations will be followed by open discussion and all
debate will be recorded for television and radio.
The conference will end with a 'send off' for the first leg of WORLDwrite's
'Millennium Relay'. The 'Millennium Relay' is a multiple exchange programme,
which links young people globally. These young people are determined to
carry the baton for global development in support of their Southern peers.
The first leg involves a visit to India providing participants with a chance
to reconsider, through first hand experience, debates surrounding; GM crops
in the Punjab, biodiversity and displacement in the Narmada valley, site of
the 'controversial' dam project and the Indian perspective on child labour
in Delhi and Ahmadabad.
