Krakow, Poland
2-5 October, 2000
CALL FOR PAPERS & APPLICATION DEMONSTRATIONS
Organized by:
Polish Phonetic Association
Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Sprachwissenschaft (Sektion
Computerlinguistik)
In collaboration with:
The International Speech Communication Association - ISCA
Acoustical Committee of the Polish Academy of the Sciences
Web site: http://ptfon.wmid.amu.edu.pl
The scope of the workshop will range from the traditional
processing of suprasegmentals to the rapidly growing field of
multimodal applications in which prosody plays a role. The
conference is of interest to several scientific communities,
including Human Language Technologies, Linguistics, Phonetics,
Phoniatrics and Musicology. Prosody 2000 will be a forum for
cross-discipline initiatives and innovative applications,

prototypes based on this research and of the innovative multimodal
products now appearing on the market. The Call for Papers is
addressed to researchers engaged in either academic or industrial
research. In order to support the multi-disciplinary goal of the
conference, the international organising committee includes
representatives of the different scientific communities. Details of
the submission and registration procedures as well as general
workshop information can be found on the above web site.

RESEARCH POSITION IN SPEECH SYNTHESIS
Centre for Speech Technology Research
University of Edinburgh
The Centre for Speech Technology Research (CSTR) is looking to
appoint a researcher to work in unit selection for speech synthesis.
The researcher will join an established team of speech synthesis
researchers and be expected to build on current work at CSTR and
also to develop new ideas and techniques.
This post is focused on fundamental research in generating
waveforms from linguistic specifications, based on the unit
selection paradigm. The ideal candidate will have previous
experience in one or more of the areas of concatenative synthesis,
signal processing and prosody generation and in addition will have
solid programming skills.
The job offers excellent career development opportunities as CSTR
has a first class record in disseminating its work, both as open
source software and in journal and conference publications. CSTR
offers an attractive work environment with first class facilities in
terms of databases, computing network, and software. CSTR's
speech synthesis work is centred around the development of the
Festival system, and new team members will be expected
to help in the development of the system and the fundamental
research that it supports. without PhDs are also strongly
encouraged as there are opportunities to study for a PhD within the
scope of the planned research.
Ideally, the post would start in January 2000, but flexibility is
possible in the case of strong candidates.
