"Nouveaux departs en phonologie : les conceptions sub- et
suprasegmentales"
La phonologie classique s'est interesse en premier lieu au segment : en
etudiant d'une part les phonemes et d'autre part les processus
phonologiques, structuralistes et generativistes ont procede des
analyses lineaires.
Au cours des vingt dernieres annees, cette orientation segmento-lineaire
a perdu de son importance, et ce dans deux directions opposees : D'un
cote, les problemes suprasegmentaux ou prosodiques ont provoque un
interet toujours croissant on s'est e nouveau penche sur les
differents aspects des structures syllabiques, rythmiques ou melodiques
qui caracterisent les enonces oraux. D'autres chercheurs, par contre,
ont procede dans le sens oppose et ont surmont l'orientation segmentale
en abordant plutot les caracteristiques subsegmentales. Ainsi les traits
(features) se sont vus attribuer une nouvelle importance : Tandis que la
phonologie autosegmentale les a degages de leur stricte dependance des
segments, la phonologie articulatoire preconise une plus grande prise en
consideration des donnees phonetico-articulatoires.
Il est temps de tirer le bilan de ces debats et d'exposer l'etat actuel
de la phonetique et de la phonologie dans le cadre de la linguistique
romane. L'objet de la section sera de rassembler les representants des
differentes approches et de discuter le potentiel innovateur que
pourrait apporter aux problemes tant synchroniques que diachroniques une
reorientation de la phonologie vers les conceptions sub- et
suprasegmentales.

THEORETICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL NEUROPSYCHOLOGY

Montreal, Canada, June 21-23, 2001
The 12th Annual conference on Theoretical and Experimental
Neuropsychology, TENNET XII, will be held in June 2001 in Montreal,
Quebec, Canada at Universite du Quebec, Montreal, Judith-Jasmin
Building, Marie-Gerin-Lajoie Hall. The basic conference structure is
(a) two invited thematic symposia of 3 hours, followed by (b)
refereed poster papers. The poster papers are discussed after the
second symposium, each afternoon.
Participants may submit papers for consideration. Because these are
refereed submissions, accepted poster papers will be published as
refereed articles in Brain and Cognition.
The deadline for refereed submissions, via e-mail only, is December 22, 2000.

Information for refereed submissions

Poster presentations should deal with a well-defined topic or problem
in any domain of experimental or theoretical neuropsychology,
including neurolinguistics, development and history. Submissions are
in two parts (a) a 100- to 150-word abstract, and (b) a detailed
description of the paper. If applicable, the description should
include an Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, and Full
references sections. Up to two (2) tables or graphs can also be added.
Please make sure that your complete mailing address, with your
institutional affiliation, if any, and telephone number are included
with your submission. This information is needed to properly prepare
the program if your paper is accepted. Your submission should be sent
by e-mail to arrive by the December 22 deadline to the chair of the
program committee.
IMPORTANT: Please check your submission with a general-purpose

especially knowledge of Hebrew phonetics, for work on a multilingual
application. Some advice on how a Hebrew dialog might differ from an
English dialog would also be needed. Finally, prompt translation
would also be involved. The work would be part time with a flexible

Africa.
VISION:
The Department of Linguistics at Wits has established itself
internationally through ground-breaking instrumental phonetics work on
Khoisan languages. It has also been a centre for work on the phonology,
morphology and semantics both of Zulu, Venda, and other south-eastern
Bantu languages, and of South African English.
The department is in the process of actively consolidating and extending
its research focus within the Southern African Linguistics community. We
are at present refining a vision which builds on the department's
30-year history of research and teaching in the context of South Africa;
at first a politically and intellectually embattled South
Africa, but since 1994 a country of new and enormous regional,
continental and international academic potential.
The vision being articulated will lead the department into 2001 with one;
possibly more ; moderately large research
programme in place. This research programme underpins the new teaching
and research focus which has been formulated ; under intense
discussion; by the current Linguistics staff (faculty): to
immediately expand the department's role in the training of skilled
linguistics fieldworkers at both undergraduate and graduate levels; to
establish an accessible archive of Southern African linguistic
materials; to make preparations for fieldwork that will ultimately lead
to dialect mapping on a significant scale.
These new directions will continue to require skilled and committed
researchers ; comprehensively trained in theoretical linguistics,
but with a sharp eye for the empirical linguistic landscapes of Southern
Africa, both urban and rural.
Johannesburg is fortunate to be able to offer the comforts of a large,
modern city, while retaining a distinctly African profile within the
wider South African context. The Wits Linguistics Department intends to
actively develop its research and teaching mission in this African
context. We seek, therefore, two highly trained, motivated individuals
who will contribute significantly to the building of a robust South
African Linguistics programme in Johannesburg at the start of the 21st
century.

departmental duties.

Postdoctoral Research Position--Cognitive Psychology
The above post is available for up to 5 years on an MRC-funded project
working with Dr. Gareth Gaskell. The research will investigate the
processes involved in learning and recognising spoken words. You will be
involved in planning, executing and analysing experiments using a variety
of experimental methods.
Demonstrated ability in the design and analysis of cognitive psychology
experiments is essential, and computer skills, such as use of spreadsheets,
statistical applications and experimental software will also be of benefit.
Ideally, you will have experience of the issues and techniques relevant to
speech perception research. The position is available at the postdoctoral
level, but applicants with a good first degree and relevant research
experience are also invited to apply.
The appointment is available from 1 November 2000 or as soon as possible

The Department of English at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University has recently
obtained a research grant to work on a project entitled "The Communicative
Role of Intonation in Hong Kong English" to start in 2001. We are looking
for expressions of interest in a possible 2-year Research Associate position
on this project. This message is not an official job advertisement as such,
but we wish to know if any possible overseas applicants exist.
It is essential that the Research Associate have a good knowledge of intonation
systems, in particular proven ability working with the ToBI system on xwaves
UNIX platform). In addition, in order to satisfy requirements for the
position of Research Associate, the RA must have a Master's degree in a
related area.
We envisage possible employment from January 2001, and are willing to wait a
number of months for the right candidate.
At the current rate of pay, the position will be remunerated at HK$ 228,660.00
p.a. (approx. US$29.500 p.a., GBP20,787 p.a.) for the first year and HK$ 240

Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Phonetics and Phonology at
the University of Ulster
The University seeks to appoint a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in
Phonetics and Phonology at its Jordanstown campus. The
appointee will contribute to the further development of research
programmes in Linguistics and Phonetics.

second class honours degree or higher degree in Phonetics,

Louisiana State University is a Research I Institute that serves
approximately 31,000 students, including 200 undergraduates and 50 graduate
students in Communication Sciences & Disorders. Faculty in the Department
participate in LSU's Aging Center and the Interdepartmental Linguistics
Program. The Department also maintains ties with a number of universities

Qualifications: Ph.D. in Communication Disorders or related area. CCC-SLP and
eligibility for Louisiana Licensure in speech-language pathology is
preferred. Preference will be given to those with expertise in neurogenic
communication disorders.
Responsibilities: Teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses in

<li>You will work within a multi-disciplinary team of linguists, engineers
and programmers on the development of software systems in the field of
Speech, Artificial Intelligence and Language.

Opportunities for collaborative research in The Centre for Research in
Language Processing and Linguistics at The University of Queensland exist
in the broad areas of
1. Connectionist modelling of natural language processing.
2. Psycho-linguistic investigations of aphasia, and language disorders in
neurogenerative disease such as Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease.
3. Linguistic reconstruction and language change in Australian languages.
4. Computational evolutionary modelling of language origins and language
change.
5. Phonetics and phonology.
The Centre for Research in Language Processing and Linguistics is presently
offering four doctoral stipends for the year 2001 each to the value of
$8,000 per annum which applicants may use in addition to other sources of
funding (e.g., APAs for Australian graduates). The doctoral stipends should
ideally be for students who wish to pursue a program of study that involves
collaboration across the Departments of English and Speech Pathology &
Audiology and the Schools of Computer Sciences and Electrical Engineering
and Psychology, although applicants should feel free to nominate their own
preferred area of research, should they so desire.
Research programs that fall exclusively within one Department/School but
that are concerned with the core areas of research interest of the Centre,

Prosody - Interdisciplinary PhD Studentship/ Dublin
Pending funding approval, a PhD studentship will shortly be available
in University College Dublin (Department of Computer Science) within a
collaborative project with MediaLab Europe, also based in Dublin. The
project is inherently cross-disciplinary, and addresses the nature and
causes of wholesale changes which speakers make to their prosody
(timing and intonation) under specific circumstances. The work will
entail analysis of existing speech databases, and conducting novel
speech experiments. Incorporation of the results into speech-based
interfaces may be possible. The position may suit a candidate with a
solid background in any of experimental or cognitive psychology,
linguistics, especially phonetics and experimental phonology, or
computer science. Strong programming skills (preferably C/C++) are a
prerequisite. The successful applicant will work both with Dr Fred
Cummins at U.C.D. and Dr Deb Roy of the MIT Media Lab and MediaLab
Europe. A very competitive stipend and full fee remission will

The Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics is offering a
scholarship for research leading toward a PhD in the field of
spoken-language comprehension.
The topic of the project is category formation in speech perception
and language learning. The research will involve perceptual
experiments and computational modeling. The successful candidate will

The Utrecht Institute of Linguistics OTS is a research institute of the
faculty of arts of Utrecht University. About a hundred people are involved
including 12 full professors, 8 postdoctoral researchers and approximately

The goal of UiL OTS is to develop scientific expertise in the area of
language, speech and their use. UiL OTS participates in the Netherlands

Applications are invited from outstanding linguistics graduate students with
an interest in spoken dialogue, HCI, and prosodic analysis of speech signals
for a 10-week full-time internship position during the Fall of 2000 or
Winter/Spring of 2001. Funding for this internship is sponsored by the
National Science Foundation, and is part of a larger NSF project entitled
"Interactive Multimodal Interfaces: Designing for Human Performance."
Students selected will participate in an interdisciplinary,
team-oriented research project investigating people's spoken and multimodal
input to interactive computer systems. This work is being conducted in a
state-of-the-art laboratory facility at OGI located in the Portland
metropolitan area.
Applicants with a background in linguistics,
especially in prosodic analysis of spoken language, are strongly encouraged to
apply. Students with a background in computer science, cognitive science,
psychology, or human factors also will be considered if their primary interest
and experience is in spoken dialogue, speech technology, HCI, and speech
