1. Where is the pressure to be applied?
Applying only tie-rod load is sufficient to study final behavior of system, as pressure is applied as an aid to pre-tighten tie rods and then removed.
2. What should be the criterion for arriving at the correct fictitious temperature?
You need to take 3-4 iterations to arrive at temperature that gives desired average pressure on plates. As a first run you may give temperature which will cause same elongation of tie rod as the theoritical compression of plates due to pressure force.
3. In the assembly the tie rods will not share any compressive load. Is it not essential to
use tension-only elements to model the tie rods.
IMHO tie rods can be modelled with normal beam elements. There should not be any reason why they should come under compression under given loading.
