Following are details of an upcoming conference at the Paul Mellon
Centre
that may be of interest to your members. The Paul Mellon Centre is a
non-profit educational institution for the promotion of the history of
British art and architecture.

Destination Anywhere
The Architecture of Transport in the Twentieth Century
Wednesday 8th March 2000 at the Paul Mellon Centre

No aspect of the twentieth century has done more to alter the physical
environment of the nation and the regulation of our everyday social
regimes
than the startling expansion of public transport and the proliferation
of
the private car. Despite the central importance of transport in changing
the face of modern-day Britain, the architecture of transport has
remained
a significantly under-studied aspect of British architectural history.
This one-day conference seeks to correct this imbalance, and looks at
the
profound visual transformation that the private car and public transport
have effected in Britain during the modern era. It focuses in particular
on
the evolution and subsequent adaptation of building types distinctive to
transport. One area of consideration is the architectural compositions
which resulted from the nationalisation of the railway and the expansion
of
air travel. Another is the growing popularity of the motor car, which
has
changed social and sexual attitudes, as well as having an enormous
impact
on both urban and rural environments.

The conference programme is divided into three principal
sessions-Planes,
Trains and Automobiles-and includes:

Gavin Stamp (Mackintosh School of Architecture)
Early Twentieth-Century Stations

Susie Barson (English Heritage)
