Here's an example of one alternative. One alternative doesn't solve
the problem. A society dedicated to progress would embrace this
and many other alternatives:

MEDIA ADVISORY:
CALIFORNIA FUEL CELL PARTNERSHIP CO-SPONSORS
CALIFORNIA INTERNATIONAL MARATHON
Pace Cars will Lead Race
(West Sacramento) Fuel cell-powered electric vehicles – which
emit nothing more than water vapor for exhaust -- will pace
thousands of runners this Sunday at the California International
Marathon (www.runcim.org). The California Fuel Cell Partnership is
one of the major sponsors for the event.
The weekend activities begin with a health expo at the event’s
headquarters hotel, the Doubletree Inn. Fuel cell vehicles will be on
display outside the hotel on both Friday, December 1 and
Saturday, December 2. On Sunday, two fuel cell vehicles --
DaimlerChrysler’s NECAR and Ford’s Focus FCV – will lead the
race. At the finish line, Nissan will display their fuel cell vehicle.
The California Fuel Cell Partnership (www.fuelcellpartnership.org) is
a public-private venture that is working to advance fuel cell
technology as a clean and viable alternative form of transportation.
Over the next three years, more than 70 fuel cell-powered cars and
buses will drive on California’s roadways in real-world conditions.
The members include: The Partnership includes auto
manufacturers (DaimlerChrysler, Ford, GM, Honda, Hyundai,
Nissan, Toyota, and Volkswagen), energy providers (BP, Shell,
Texaco), fuel cell companies (Ballard Power Systems, International
Fuel Cells, and XCELLSiS), and government agencies (the
California Air Resources Board, California Energy Commission,
U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Department of Transportation,
and the South Coast Air Quality Management District).
The partnership recently opened a headquarters facility in West
Sacramento which will serve as an operations base for
demonstrating fuel cell vehicle technology and an alternative fuel
infrastructure. The facility features an educational center that is
open weekdays to the public.
Fuel cell technology offers the potential for cars and buses that are
nearly pollution-free in the near future.
