The problem is that the current technology is not sufficient. You'd need
lots of solar panels I mean lots. Also, a big part of the problem is that
prices in CA are set by the Power Exchange and since most of the state's
power users are still under a rate freeze there is very little demand
response. There is also a problem with market power by current generators
(the system wasn't built with competition in mind). And since dergulation
started back in 1996 there has been very little additional generating
capacity built due to uncertainty as to what the new market would look
like.
So once the rest of the state utilities end their rate freezes, and the
generating stations being built are finished prices should drop
considerably. Also, it was bad timing that SDG&E's rate freeze ended in
the summer when prices are usually high anyways. Once winter gets here
the prices will drop.
Of course research in alternatives is a good idea. SCE is one of the
supporters of Solar 2, a solar generating system that uses some kind of
salt crystals and can actually generate electricity at night. Of course
it is very new and very expensive.
