Liverpool Hope University College are holding a one day dissemination event on sharing the good practices and challenges of introducing a new approach to the higher education curriculum. Promoting curriculum as process and education development.
VENUE: Liverpool Hope University College
DATE: Thursday 13th April 2000
TIME: 9.30am till 4.00pm
Guest speakers Dr Peter Hawkins and Laura Cockran
Workshops within the event will include:
New Approaches to the Curriculum: A challenge or a threat?
The new curriculum: A threat to be resisted by Lecturers, or a challenge to be embraced?
On-line Communication: All or nothing?
HopeLIVE is an on-line student resource centre incorporating our own virtual learning environment: the Module Communication Centre. Students can interact effectively over the internet using on-line seminars, message facilities, and real chat time areas.
Teaching Key Skills: Within or without subjects?
Many subject specialists argue that skills should always be taught within as subject context. In this workshop we will look at ways of presenting skills in a general context and enabling students to make links with their subjects themselves.
Clear Thinking: Can it be taught?
This session will consider, with reference to research into critical thinking, issues relating to the development of effective programmes for enhancing students' thinking skills. Examples of open learning materials developed at Hope will be available.
Curriculum Change: Managing or managed?
Change is a concept all too familiar to those in higher education. We have all faced change in numbers (usually upward). We are constantly struggling with changes in curriculum, or changing, levels of expectations, both on the part of students, but equally on the part of management. One of the most profound areas of change is the use of technology, something that every subject area now faces in one way or another. This session will attempt to address some of these issues with specific attention placed on using change to best effect.
Learner Autonomy: Can it be promoted?
Learner autonomy is good rhetoric, but how can we implement it? This seminar is about learner autonomy in practice.
Supporting the New Undergraduate: Can it be achieved?
This workshop is based upon The Geography for the New Undergraduate Project which produced customisable materials for a small-group teaching programme which gives students opportunities to develop personal, interpersonal and transferable skills within a geographical context.
