I have a part-time MSc student who is working on a project to construct
an industrial facility upon an existing PFA ash lagoon which is
underlain by an existing/insitu clay layer with clay bunds surrounding
it.
The main concerns are that;
adding any pressure to the PFA will "push" contaminants through the clay
lining/bund into the surrounding water and drainage channels (I imagine
that the shear strength of the clay is low and that the bund wall quite
thin, but am not certain about the uniformity of the clay bund in terms
of its 'water' permeability);
engineering works may damage the integrity of the lagoon; or
that the works will lead to the PFA contaminants leaving the site by
other unforseen means.
Do list members know of any case studies which have been written up that
consider problems of this kind?
Many Thanks,
Dr. Paul H. McMahon
