Midland Geotechnical Society
NOTICE OF MEETING
The 8th Meeting of the Society and will be held on Monday 17 April 2000
at 7p.m. in the HAWORTH BUILDING, the University of Birmingham B15 2TT
Subject: Managing Geotechnical Risk
Speaker: Professor Chris Clayton, Southampton University
Ground-related problems can pose very significant risks, in terms of health and
safety, finance and completion period, to construction projects. The normal
approach has been to attempt to identify hazards through ground investigation,
and then to design them out before the start of construction. However, there is
now ample evidence that this approach does not always work, even when
using traditional design and construction arrangements. This talk identifies
why ground-related risks are so important. It will be argued that given the
changing contractual arrangements increasingly in use for main works
construction, new tactics are required. Suggestions for improving geotechnical
risk management will be made.
Members and visitors should aim to arrive between 6 p.m. and 6.15 p.m. and
park their cars in a perimeter car park. Normal refreshments (bread, pate,
cheese and coffee) will be available in the main bar of Staff House before the
meeting. At about 6.45 p.m. members should walk across to the Haworth
Chemistry Building.
