Dear Colleagues, please find below an advertisment for a post-
doctoral research post available at the University of Nottingham.
UNIVERSITY OF NOTTINGHAM
SCHOOL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING
RESEARCH ASSOCIATE IN SOIL
MECHANICS
A Research Associate is required to work on an EPSRC funded
project within the Division of Pavement and Geotechnical
Engineering at the School of Civil Engineering. The project will
be directed by Dr Glenn McDowell. The objective of the
project is to investigate micro mechanical behaviour of soils
using numerical and experimental techniques. The successful
candidate will be expected to perform numerical modelling of
crushable aggregates using the discrete element program PFC3D,
and to perform laboratory tests on single soil grains and soil
aggregates. The aim is to model numerically the fracture of real
soil grains, and the one-dimensional compression of an
aggregate of the same soil before using the software to predict
triaxial behaviour. Ideally, candidates should have a good first
degree in civil or materials engineering, and be able to program
in FISH or C++. A background in soil mechanics or
plasticity/fracture would be an advantage.
Salary will be within the range £17,238 - £21,597 per annum,
depending on qualifications and experience. This post will be
offered on a fixed-term contract for a period of 12 months. The
earliest possible start date is 1 June 2000 and the latest start
date is 1 November 2000.
Informal inquiries may be addressed to Dr G.R. McDowell, tel
(0115) 9514603, fax (0115) 9513898 or Email:

Candidates should send a detailed CV, together with any
relevant supporting material and the names of two referees (at
least one of which should be academic), to Dr G.R. McDowell,
School of Civil Engineering, University of Nottingham, University
Park, Nottingham, NG7 2RD. Please indicate in the covering
letter your earliest start date. Closing date: 1 April 2000.
