: Marine Mammal Course Announcement
: 
: The Coastal Ecosystems Research Foundation is accepting applications
: for its 2000 course on marine mammal research techniques. A Canadian
: registered charitable organisation, CERF has been conducting
: ecological research and teaching its continuing education level
: marine mammal course since 1994, focusing on a group of grey and
: humpback whales that return every summer to feed on the Central Coast
: of British Columbia, Canada. This year's course will concentrate on
: grey & humpback whale abundance & movements, grey whale feeding
: ecology, heart physiology, and swimming biomechanics. Additional
: topics include the measurement of abiotic variables and coastal
: biodiversity.
: 
: Research & instruction will be carried out from a pair of 38'
: converted fishboats, smaller motorboats, sea-kayaks, and shore
: stations. Instruction consists of semi-formal lectures, workshops and
: hands-on learning, in which participants will be incorporated
: directly into research teams to work alongside CERF biologists. In
: addition to the field research techniques, instruction and hands-on
: experience in navigation & sea-kayaking will be provided. Cost
: includes tuition, all meals, return transportation from Port Hardy to
: the base camp, and tent accommodation.
: 
: Topics covered during the week-long course: grey whale-mysid shrimp
: ecology: succession, disturbance, optimal foraging, carrying
: capacity; photo-identification & mark-recapture abundance models;
: grey whale heart physiology & swimming biomechanics; orca social
: structure & acoustic behaviour; First Nations cultural ecology;
: conservation issues.
