An E-Victory for Bush

Students across the nation elected George W. Bush for president Friday in
the first unofficial, nationwide online vote in history. But are the results
any indication of next week's election? Probably not.
Besides being under the voting age -- and thus unable to vote in Tuesday's
real election -- school-age kids presumably come with their own sets of
priorities and rationales for picking candidates.
"We do not view it as an indicator," said Youth-e-Vote founder Doug Bailey.
"We view it as a voice of young people."
However, the impressive turnout might be a positive indication for the
future. With over 1 million K-12 students in all 50 states casting
unofficial votes, the Youth-e-Vote election is the largest online election
yet.
"It's very indicative of the desire of young people to engage in the
political scene, make their voice be heard -- and they like to do it over
the Web," said Rich Arends, vice president of sponsor election.com, the
company that conducted America's first binding online election in the 2000
Arizona Democratic primary.
