New Book Reviews in Cyberculture Studies
Each month, the Resource Center for Cyberculture Studies (RCCS)
<otal.umd.edu/~rccs/> publishes two or more full-length book reviews. The
reviews reflect a modest attempt to locate critically various contours of
the emerging and interdisciplinary field of cyberculture studies. To date,
RCCS has reviewed over 60 books, covering a range of topics, from online
culture, communities, and identities to hypertext, digital literacy, and
artificial intelligence to Internet policy, the digital divide, and online
privacy.
This month, RCCS reviews three books. We begin with Derek Van Ittersum's
review of David Bunnell's Making the Cisco Connection: The Story Behind
the Real Internet Superpower (John Wiley & Sons, 2000). Next up are
*three* separate reviews -- by Katrien Jacobs, Edrie Sobstyl and Rebecca
Zorach -- of Zillah Eisenstein's Global Obscenities: Patriarchy,
Capitalism, and the Lure of Cyberfantasy (NYU Press, 1998). Finally, John
McLaughlin reviews David Noble's The Religion of Technology: The Divinity
of Man and the Spirit of Invention (Penguin Books, 1999).
Forthcoming books to be reviewed include Anne B. Keating with Joseph
Hargitai's The Wired Professor: A Guide to Incorporating the World Wide
Web in College Instruction and Tim Jordan's Cyberpower: The Culture and
Politics of Cyberspace and the Internet. If you or your colleagues have
any interest in reviewing books for RCCS, contact us directly at
