Virtual communities are among the most truly interactive medium so far
developed. Much of what passes for interaction on the Internet today offers
the user no chance to participate other than by pressing cyberbuttons. Few
have taken up the challenge of enfolding the user into the creative process.
Virtual communities are now the focus of much urgent attention, and the
third conference in this series reviews what is happening at the moment and
how we can learn from it to help build successful virtual communities now
and in the future.
The 2000 International Conference on Virtual communities will give attendees
time to network and intermingle, as well as provide the opportunity to learn
from around 20 speakers from among those who have been in the front lines of
Virtual Community action. Scheduled speakers so far include people such as
Joel Bellenson of Digiscents, Mark Dodd of AuctionWatch, Cliff Figallo of
EchelonFive, Peter Friedman of Talk City, Steve Glenn of PeopleLink, Andrew
Gray, of Sift, Lucy Kimbell of the N.C. Company, Donald Klein of ingenta,
Sylvia Lacock, Dan Metcalfe of Fortunecity, Tony Rockliff of Cybertown, Matt
Rushton of OpenSite Technologies, Sue Thomas of trAce, Camilo Wilson of
Cogix Corporation ...
The conference is chaired by the founder-chairman, Hugh Look. Prominent in
the organising committee are Sylvia Lacock Marino of California, and Dawn
Marie Yankeelov of DMI, Kentucky.
This year's Virtual Communities meeting lasts two days and takes place in
the Church House Conference Centre in Westminster, just behind Westminster
Abbey. The conference includes lunches on both days, refreshment breaks plus
a mixer cocktail to enhance interaction and networking among attendees.
Early booking is recommended, since the capacity at Church House is finite
and limited.
