Hi folks
Some of you may be interested in this new list starting up on mailbase. If
you are not sure, Chris is pretty well known in anarchist/anarchy circles
and in journals such as _Anarchist Studies_.
Best wishes
John

Subject: Alternative media discussion list
I'm sending this to everyone who expressed an interest in a network for
alternative media studies/'voices from below'/community media.
As a first step, I've set up a discussion list via the UK academic list
provider Mailbase.
Many of you expressed reservations about the terminology used to
describe
our areas of research - 'margins' , 'voices from below' and
'alternative'
were all found wanting by some people. Terminology and theorisation
around
it can of course be part of our discussions, but for now I've opted to
call
the list 'altmedia' for the sake of brevity.
You can subscribe to 'altmedia' by visiting the list's web page at
www.mailbase.ac.uk/lists/altmedia
<http://www.mailbase.ac.uk/lists/altmedia>
.
Whilst Mailbase's remit is to serve the UK academic community, I would
encourage researchers throughout the world to subscribe.
Once you've subscribed, you'll receive a general guide to using mailbase
lists, within which I've placed a brief introduction setting out what I
think some of our aims could be. These will, I have no doubt, develop
as we
start talking.
In time, I hope to supplement the list with web pages: if anyone would
like
to see these pages used for specific purposes, send a message to the
list.
A personal priority of mine would be to web-publish a bibliography of
scholarly research into alternative media and to maintain it on the web.
Finally, I've set this up just before my own Easter vacation takes me to
the
US for various speaking engagements - having set the list up, I'm
abandoning
it already! Forgive me, therefore, if my voice is absent for the next
couple of weeks - I'm away from 8 April to 25 April.
I hope altmedia is useful to you and helps us keep in touch about issues
in
this area.
