Workshop on:
Innovation, technological change and growth in knowledge based and service
intense economies
The Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, February 1-2, 2001
The purpose of this workshop is to stimulate applied and theoretical
research on the changing nature of innovation and to bring researchers
attention to the problems associated with measurement of technological
change and growth in the more knowledge based and service intense economies.
The main objective is to discuss problem related to: innovation and growth
indicators, data quality, concepts, models and theories of growth,
technological change and competitiveness at the firm level. We will
particularly focus on the changing nature of innovation, knowledge formation
and the innovative firm. The focus will be on theoretical, conceptual and
methodological aspects of analysing the relation between innovation and
growth. The character of the workshop will be presentation and critical
discussions of ongoing research rather than final results.
The workshop will invite prominent researchers from different disciplines of
innovation studies to give surveys of the research frontiers as well as
papers in the proceedings to provide a forum for discussion and exchange of
new ideas and to ease interaction between innovation researchers from
different branches. Normally, economists within different disciplines of
innovation research are not well aware of progress outside their own
research field. It is evident that different branches have their own
advantages and limitations. An increased collaboration is, however, a
necessary condition to facilitate a better understanding of the ongoing
transformation process towards a knowledge based economy. The workshop
consists of two types of sessions: (1) a more theoretical oriented and
conceptual discussion on the changed nature of innovation, knowledge
formation and the innovative firm, and (2) an empirical oriented discussion
on statistics, indicators, models and methods used in the studies on
innovation and growth
The participants of the workshop are invited to submit their abstracts
before December 1, 2000 to the workshop organisers to the following address:
[log in to unmask] <mailto:[log in to unmask]>. The submitted
papers will be reviewed by the program committee. Accepted papers are
invited presentation at the workshop and later for publication in the
workshop proceedings. The length of the proceeding papers should not exceed
10 pages and the topic being within the frame of the following themes
namely: (a) theoretical and empirical evidence on the changing nature of
innovation firm level, (b) the patterns of innovation and growth in
services, (c) different kind of innovations (conceptual, marketing and
organisational innovations, radical versus incremental, individual versus
aggregated, high technology versus low technology product, innovations in
manufacturing versus innovations in services) and analysis of their
differences and similarities, and (d) statistics and indicators on
innovation, advantages and limitations of general survey versus individual
case studies.
Keynote speakers: Professor Alfred Kleinknecht, Technische Universitiet,
Delft and Professor Tor Jacob Klette, University of Oslo.
Some important dates: Deadline for submission of abstract, December 1, 2000.
