IFIP WG8.1 Working Conference
Organizational Semiotics: evolving a science of information systems, 23rd -
25th July, 2001, Montreal, Canada

Invitation of papers
Papers are invited from colleagues that discuss dealing with all relevant
aspects of information and organization. Papers in the awkward area between the
technical and the social domains are especially welcome. Some of the terms that
require our attention include 'information', 'data', 'meaning', 'message',
'communication', 'knowledge', 'organization' and plenty more.
The following questions are examples of questions that you may wish to address
in your paper: Can we be satisfied with the world of abstract formalisms that
suffices for most computer science? Can we apply the rigor of formality while
including the human aspects? Can our analysis of organization lead to theories
of such detail and precision that they are open to refutation that is difficult
to attain with the current style of most social theorizing? What then are the
populations we examine empirically and what are legitimate methods of enquiry?
How does organizational semiotics relate to the established disciplines:
commonalties and differences? We don't want to duplicate either computer
science or social studies of the impacts of ICT. We do want to add to their
value and justify our work.
