The Cambridge Laboratory of the Xerox Research Centre Europe (XRCE) is
looking for an exceptional researcher to work with our social scientists to
translate their fieldwork observations into innovative, insightful and
inspiring design concepts. The successful candidate will have the
opportunity to work on a European funded long-term research project, MIME,
in collaboration with Philips Design and Nottingham University (Computer
Science dept.) as well as a range of other internal projects.
MIME (Multiple Intimate Media Environments) will envision new paradigms of
interaction and radically different ways to conceive of computation. The
theme of 'disappearing' or ubiquitous computing will be explored by focusing
upon assemblies of new types of devices, appliances, media and spaces.
Technology design will be grounded in detailed studies of environments, such
as the home, which are on the edge of radical changes in computing use. XRCE
has substantial experience in media-spaces, ubiquitous computing
environments, context sensitive systems, collaborative work and user
studies.
The main qualities required for this post are outstanding creativity, team
working and the ability to span traditional disciplines. Interesting
candidates may have a social science background but with considerable design
experience, or design experience with demonstrable interests in users and
interactive systems, or technical experience with strong design skills in
producing leading edge creative concepts. Typically we would expect
candidates to have completed a PhD but applicants with comparable experience
and research skills will also be considered.
The post is for 14 months starting at the beginning of 2001. An excellent
salary is available for the right candidate and the opportunity to work in a
dynamic multi-disciplinary research environment.
Collaborations with our sister lab in Grenoble and with the Xerox Palo Alto
Research Centre will be encouraged. Further details on XRCE are available
